When we sit in our pew at church on Sunday and gaze out the stained glass window as the preacher drone on about God’s attributes, it is easy to accept the notion that God rules the universe. Such concepts appear to have little direct impact upon our lives as we recline comfortably among God’s people.
However, it is Monday morning when we enter a secular marketplace abuzz with rumors, machinations, and carnality that we suddenly realize how critical it is to our life and well being that God is still upon His throne. Peaceful solitude does not necessarily drive is to our knees in prayer, but cruel attacks from an enemy do. A world at peace might not draw our thoughts heavenward, but a world victimized by violence will.
It is when the world seems to be falling apart that we eagerly proclaim that God reigns! He is upon His throne and no crisis, cruel dictator, or economic downturn can dislodge Him. He is our hope and He is unshakeable. Such a thought ought to cause us to want to shout from the rooftops: “The Lord reigns!”
