Surrendered Strength

God is all-powerful. Nevertheless, He will show Himself weak, on your behalf, when you reject Him. The Israelites had the unprecedented privilege of having the God of the universe choose to dwell among them. The tabernacle symbolized God’s holy presence in the midst of His people. It was in that sacred tent that Moses had met with God face to face. It was in that holy habitation that God had issued directives to His people as they followed Him in the wilderness.

Yet, as so often happens, people began to take God’s presence for granted. The tabernacle was always there when they needed it. When enemies attacked, they could trust that God’s presence would defeat them. But God will never allow Himself to be taken for granted! So He allowed the Philistines to defeat His people and to capture the Ark of the Covenant that was kept in the tabernacle. God’s people were dumbfounded. How could God allow His holy abode to be defiled by pagan idol worshipers? The Israelites learned that God was not a good luck charm that could be pulled out, dusted off, and manipulated, when needed.

At times God’s judgment on His people is to show Himself weak on their behalf. He will allow your enemies to defeat you, and even to mock your beliefs. How long would God have to show Himself weak in your life, before you did whatever was necessary to once again experience His power?
